Cracks, rocky substance found by expert team

Idukki, Kerala, May 29:Small cracks and presence of rocky substances have been found at Mullaperiyar Dam by a team of scientists from Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) at Thrissur.

According to sources in the dam office here today, the team had already started a preliminary study for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the dam.

The team would also look into environmental impact on the region in connection with the construction of a new dam for which a site was identified 614 metres below the existing structure.

A Central Team of scientists from Central Soil and Materials Research Station (CSMRS) has also began the Remote Operating Vehicle (ROV) tests at Mullaperiyar Dam.

Second accused in sensational Sheela murder case found guilty

Palakkad, May 20: A local court today pronounced as guilty the second accused Kanakaraj in the sensational Puthur Sheela murder case in Palakkad district of Kerala.

The Palakkad Additional District and Sessions Court, however, acquitted Manikandan, the third accused in the murder case.

The quantum of punishment for Kanakaraj would be announced tomorrow, the Court said.

Kanakaraj was found guilty on various charges, including murder, robbery and attempt to murder.

Sheela, wife of a businessman, was killed in 2010 at her house at Puthur. Her mother Karthiyayini was also attacked by a three member gang.

Three people have been accused in the case. Sampath, the first accused died in police custody. This custodial death is currently being investigated by the CBI.
