MUNNAR (Ker): Cracking down on encroachers, Congress-led UDF government in Kerala on Monday began a fresh round of anti-land encroachment campaign in Munnar in Idukki district, retrieving about 450 acres on the first day itself.

Revenue minister Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan, who led the drive, said in Munnar that those who were trying to sabotage the mission would be sternly dealt with.

However, poor families living in small patches would be resettled but no lenience would be shown towards big encroachers who continued to hold on to the land illegally possessed by them despite government's warning to leave on their own, he said.

After retrieving swathes of land in areas like Chinnakkanal and Anayirankal catchment region, government boards were erected warning that trespassers would be prosecuted.

Chief minister Oommen Chandy last month convened an all party meet and evolved a political consensus to go ahead with the anti-encroachment drive. Two weeks' time was then given to encroachers to quit the grabbed lands on their own, which ended yesterday.

The previous LDF government had retrieved large stretches of land during its drive against encroachers in Munnar. However, the campaign ran into trouble before it was completely accomplished as local leadership of most political parties raised objections to the drive, especially pulling down their party offices in the area.
