SFI agitation turns violent

Kannur, Jun 23 :Six police men, including a DYSP and Circle Inspector, and four Students Federation of India (SFI) activists were injured when a SFI march to Collectorate turned violent today.

According to police, about 1300 SFI activists led by V Siva Dasan its national Joint Secretary, took out a march to District Collectorate at 1130 hrs, demanding admission in the self-financing colleges be given on merit basis and social justice, 50 per cent students fees in these colleges be brought on par with the fees in government colleges and withdrewal of government's decosion to give NOCs to new ICSE and CBSE schools in the state.

Police led by DySP, Santhosh K V , blocked the march in front of the Collectorate. SFI District unit Secretary V K Sanoj and 33 activists broke the police cordon and entered the collectorate premises.

Following this, police arrested 33 SFI activists and detained them to town police station. Follwing this, stones were pelted at the police allegdly by the SFI activists in which six were injured, including DySP Santhosh K V and Premachandran Circle Inspector and four SFI activists.

Police also used force and burst water cannons to disperse the activists. Tension prevailed for about an hour at the Caltex Junction, before the situation was brought under control, police said.

Meanwhile, SFI sources said about ten students were admitted to a private hospital here and many SFI activists, including Mr Sivadasan, were injured when police used force.
