SFI march against self financing college issue turns violent

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 24 : About ten people, including students, policemen and mediapersons were today injured when the protest march taken out by the pro-CPI(M) Students Federation of India (SFI) to the Assembly in connection with the self financing issue turned violent.

The march, which began from University College premises, turned violent before it reached the Assembly complex. The SFI activists pelted stones at the police, which retorted to lathicharge and using grenades.

The police said the injured included four SFI activists, four policemen and three mediapersons.

The police even entered the university campus but later retreated.

The SFI had taken out the protest march against the alleged secret deal between the management and government in the self- financing college issue.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Several students and policemen were injured after a protest march taken out by CPM's students wing, SFI, against the UDF government's education policy turned violent on Friday.

Police lobbed teargas shells, used water cannon and lathicharged the protestors after they attacked them when they tried to prevent them from moving towards the state assembly complex, police said.

The protesters also vented their anger at a few government vehicles. The melee, which lasted for over an hour, halted traffic in the heart of the city.

Police accused the marchers of having triggered the violence while SFI leaders alleged that the violence was unleashed on protesters as part of a pre-planned strategy to suppress the agitation.

The injured were rushed to hospitals. Pro-Left student outfits in the state have been on protest mode for the last several days accusing the UDF government of having failed to rein in the managements of self-financing colleges which had declined to follow the policy of filling half the seats in their institutions from the state quota.

SFI agitation turns violent

Kannur, Jun 23 :Six police men, including a DYSP and Circle Inspector, and four Students Federation of India (SFI) activists were injured when a SFI march to Collectorate turned violent today.

According to police, about 1300 SFI activists led by V Siva Dasan its national Joint Secretary, took out a march to District Collectorate at 1130 hrs, demanding admission in the self-financing colleges be given on merit basis and social justice, 50 per cent students fees in these colleges be brought on par with the fees in government colleges and withdrewal of government's decosion to give NOCs to new ICSE and CBSE schools in the state.

Police led by DySP, Santhosh K V , blocked the march in front of the Collectorate. SFI District unit Secretary V K Sanoj and 33 activists broke the police cordon and entered the collectorate premises.

Following this, police arrested 33 SFI activists and detained them to town police station. Follwing this, stones were pelted at the police allegdly by the SFI activists in which six were injured, including DySP Santhosh K V and Premachandran Circle Inspector and four SFI activists.

Police also used force and burst water cannons to disperse the activists. Tension prevailed for about an hour at the Caltex Junction, before the situation was brought under control, police said.

Meanwhile, SFI sources said about ten students were admitted to a private hospital here and many SFI activists, including Mr Sivadasan, were injured when police used force.
