Selling books in trains: means of livelihood for Davis

Kochi, May 29: As the Kannur-Alappuzha Express leaves Thrissur Railway Station, Davis carries bundles of books on both hands and place them in small numbers on the seats of passengers.

Its a routine job of Davis, a deaf and dump youth, hailing from Thrissur. He sells the books to passengers in the trains and earns his livelihood.

This is a common scene in the trains that run across the state.

Many youths, including handicapped, and women are engaged in the business to earn their daily bread.

Hailing from the cultural city of Thrissur, Davis is engaged in the business for the past 15 years. He earns more than Rs 250 daily through the sale of books, he told UNI in writing.

Asked where he starts his journey, he says he gets in the train at Shornur and the journey ends at Ernakulam. From where he catches another train to his native place Thrissur and does his business inside the running trains, moving from one compartment to another.

During his to-and-fro journey from Shornur Ernakualm, he sells between 100 to 125 books daily.
