Kerala to introduce Water Metro

Kochi, Jun 10: Kerala Water Resources Minister P J Joseph today said the state government was proposing to introduce a ''water metro'', exploiting the facilities of canals in the business city.

Talking to reporters here, he said the proposal of canal navigation would be introduced connecting six canals, including Thevara-Perunthany and Thrippunithura-Edappally.

As the canals in the city were administred by the Coroporation, the government can introduce the water metro, bringing relief to commuters'' if the city corporation handed over the administrative power to the Irrigation Department.

As proper maintanance was required for successful functioning of the water-metro, the canals should be handed over to the Irrigation Department, he added.

Mr Joseph also said the work of the seaport-airport waterway would commence in 100 days programme of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) Government.
