Rampant corruption destroying democracy: V S Achuthanandan

Kochi, May 29 : Pointing out huge undercurrents occurring in our democratic set up, Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly and Senior CPI(M) leader V S Achuthanandan said rampant corruption and greed for power was destroying the fabric of democracy.

In his valedictory address on the concluding day of a seminar on ''Judiciary, democracy and the public interest'', organised jointly by Media Information and Communication Centre of India (MICCI), New Delhi and Media Education for Awareness and Social Transformation, Thiruvananthapuram, he said as a result of this, internal differences and conflicts were increasing in the society.

Conflicts were taking place between Legislature and Executive on one side and Judiciary and Media on the other, he said adding as the democratic institutions in the country were matured, they were forced to continue to give mutual respect to each other.

Stating the Judiciary was not at all a completely non-corrupted system, he said if we could go through the experience of past few years, ''we could find visible mixed response in this regard.''
