HC dismisses plea to postpone Kerala elections

KOCHI: The Kerala high court on Thursday dismissed a writ petition seeking postponement of the assembly elections in the state scheduled for April 13.

The petitioner, M Vinod Vengeri of Kozhikode, submitted that as the polls were scheduled "in the midst of holidays and festivals", a majority of people would not turn up to cast their votes.

In this regard, the petitioner sought postponement of the polls after 'Vishu', which falls on April 14.

A division bench comprising Justice C N Ramachandran Nair and Justice B P Ray dismissed the petition 'in limine' (a motion presented at the outset of a case to determine the admissibility of certain evidence), recording that the election process has been set in motion and the court cannot interfere in the conduct of the election.
