President arrives on a three-day visit

Governor R.S. Gavai, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Mayor K. Chandrika, Chief Secretary P. Prabhakaran, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Southern Air Command Air Marshal Satish Pal Singh and Director General of Police Jacob Punnoose received the President at the tarmac. Speaker G. Karthikeyan, Deputy Speaker N. Sakthan, Revenue Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala, senior officials and religious leaders were present at the airport to greet the President.

Soon after the reception, Ms. Patil left for Kollam by helicopter where she will stay overnight at a hotel and leave for Kottayam in the morning. She will address the valedictory of the centenary celebration of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy of Kottayam at noon. She will inaugurate the President's Trophy boat race in the Ashtamudi backwaters in Kollam in the evening..

The President will fly back to Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday morning and inaugurate the regional centre of the Indira Gandhi National Open University here. She will return to Delhi the same day afternoon.

The President will also launch three major social initiatives by the archeparchy on the occasion. These include a housing project that would benefit 250 families, a centenary health insurance scheme and a revolving, interest-free education loan scheme. Beneficiaries for the schemes will be selected without any religious or communal consideration.

The resources for the housing scheme will be mobilised at the local level. According authorities, the health insurance scheme envisages to incorporate 30,000 families and subsidised premium will be allowed to the needy. The education loan aims at meritorious students who are unable to go for higher education on account of financial problems.

Major Archbishop George Alancherry will preside over the function. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Governor R.S. Gavai, Supreme Court Justice Cyirac Joseph, Archbishop Mathew Moolakkattu, Minister for Finance K.M. Mani, Minister for Revenue Thiruvachoor Radhakrishnan, Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, Papal Nuncio, Jose K. Mani, MP, Bishop Joseph Pandarasseril and others will speak.

According to district authorities, the President who arrives at the Police Parade grounds here by helicopter at 11.55 a.m. will reach the venue on the BCM College premises by road. After the completion of the programme, she would leave for Kollam at 1.10 p.m.

SIMI's former president nabbed at Kochi airport

Kochi, June 25 : Former president of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) Sainulabudeen was nabbed soon after his arrival at the Kochi international airport here Saturday morning, police sources said.

Sainulabudeen was taken into custody by a team of the Madhya Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad as soon as he arrived here from Dubai.

He holds a passport issued from Madhya Pradesh, even though he possibly hails from Andhra Pradesh.

He has been taken into custody to probe a few bomb blasts that took place in Madhya Pradesh, police said.

SIMI is an Islamic student organisation that was formed in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, in April 1977. SIMI aims to "liberate" India from Western materialistic cultural influences and to encourage the Muslim society to follow the Muslim code of conduct.

SIMI was first banned in 2002 by the then National Democratic Alliance government but in August 2008, a special tribunal lifted the ban.

The apex court, in August 2008, reinstated the ban.
