KOCHI: A 70-year-old retired naval official has been arrested in connection with the case relating to the rape of a minor girl allegedly by 100-odd persons, police said today.

A young businessman from the temple town of Palani in Tamil Nadu was also arrested along with the ex-serviceman Rajan Nair, who was a neighbour of the girl hailing from Paravoor in Ernakulam district, police sources said.

Thirty two year-old Magudiswaran from Palani, a 61-year-old-man from Palakkad, Swamidasan and Shebin (28) were arrested yesterday, taking the total arrests in the case to 55.

The girl's father, who was allegedly the first to exploit her, is among those who have been arrested.

In another case of sexual abuse of a minor girl from Kothamangalam near here, at least 11 persons have been arrested. Two classmates of the girl were also picked by police in connection with the case and produced before the Juvenile Justice Board after which they were allowed to go with their parents, sources said.

Former Kerala minister Sujanapal dead

Former Kerala minister A. Sujanapal died Thursday morning at a private hospital here, family members said.

Sujanapal, 62, had twice been Congress legislator. He did not contest the recent assembly polls as he was suffering from cancer.

Sujanapal was the minister for forests and environment in the last (2004-06) Oommen Chandy government.

He had started his career in student politics and rose to become a minister. He had authored several books.

Sujanapal's funeral will be held here Friday.

He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

Former SIMI regional commander arrested

Nedumbassery, Kerela, Jun 26 : In a major breakthrough, the Madhya Pradesh police has nabbed Syed Salaudeen Salar, the former Regional Commander of Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), a banned organization.

Superintendent of police Rajesh Gupta and his team with the assistance of Kerala police led by Crime Detachment Dy S P K V Vijayan took him into custody when he arrived at Kochi International Airport here from Dubai by Emirates Flight EK 530 yesterday morning.

He was accompanied by a woman claimed to be his distant relative and her son. Acting on a clue that the accused was returning to India with Emergency Certificate, the police intercepted him at the airport. The accused was arrested by the Sub-Inspector of Mahakkal police station in MP.

The woman and the boy were allowed to leave the airport.

He was immediately shifted to Aluva accompanied by a strong contingent of armed police commandos and was produced before Aluva Judicial First Class Magistrate.

The Magistrate issued the transit warrant for three days and directed the MP police to produce him before the Ujjain Judicial First Class Magistrate on or before Monday.

According to police, the accused was involved in anti-national activities and a case for the offence under IPC 153 A (Provoking enmity between groups on the ground of religion, race and engaging in acts prejudicial to maintainance of harmony with intention to cause riots) in Mahakkal police station in 1998. Since then, he was absconding.

He escaped to Dubai and had been staying there for the last ten years. Meanwhile, he was allegedly arrested by Dubai police for violating some rules in the country and was undergoing imprisonment for the last two years. He was reportedly released from the jail on amenity grounds and returned to India with Emergency Certificate issued by UAE government. But he was nabbed by the police at Kochi airport at 0900 hours yesterday.

Police said Salaudeen was born and brought up in Andhra Pradesh and stayed in Mumbai indulging in anti-national activities of SIMI in Northern states. He was the Northern Region Commander of the organisation.

He was taken back to Nedumbassery Airport by 1330 hrs.

Police took the accused by Jet Airways flight to Mumbai at 1600 hrs yesterday.
