8 spice park labs to be set up

Kochi, May 30 : Spices Board chairman V J Kurian today said the board would set up eight Spices Park Labs at the country's eight port towns.

Talking to reporters here, he said the objective of setting up such labs was to ensure the quality of the Indian spices as the demand for quality spices was good in the international market.

The board had already started to construct four such labs in Mumbai, Chennai, Guntur and Delhi and work on the remaining labs, including Tutucorin and Kolkata would start within one year, he said and expressed the hope that the construction of all the eight labs would be completed by 2017.

Mr Kurian also said the board had put a target to do 10 billion US Dollar business of spices export by 2025 and added that the target for the period 2017 was fixed at three billion USD.

Replying to a question, he said there was no need for panic of low price of cardamom as the prices would go up again soon.

Since the market for small pepper was high, the demand for Indian cardamom would be high in future, he added.
