CM orders probe into missing of 40,000 answer sheets

Thiruvananthapuram, May 29 : A Crime Branch probe was ordered into missing of 40,000 answer sheets of the examination held to appoint Assistants in Kerala University in 2005.

State Chief Minister Oommen Chandy yesterday ordered the probe and the formation of a special police team if necessary.

It was alleged that the CPI(M) controlled Syndicate prepared the rank list of 1,401 candidates after conducting the interview.

It was also alleged that 180 candidates out of the first 200 rank holders, who had been appointed, were CPI(M) nominees.

Following a complaint received by Lok Ayukta, the University was asked to present the answer sheets. But, it was found that the answer sheets were missing and the rank list had been tampered with.

Later, the previous LDF Government handed over the appointment of non-teaching staff in the university to the Public Service Commission (PSC).

However, former Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan did not order a probe into the case by the Crime Branch.k

Court orders charge sheet against Kerala CPI-M leader

The Kerala High Court Monday ordered a charge sheet to be filed against Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader M.V. Jayarajan by June 8 for his public outburst against the judiciary.

Jayarajan, who is facing contempt of court charge on the issue, told reporters after the court hearing that he has been denied natural justice.

"The court today (Monday) after looking into the evidences of my speech, did not bother to give us the copy of that. This is a clear case of denying me natural justice. Moreover, I stand by what I said because the ruling of the court that prevents assembly of people on roads is not a correct judgment in a democracy," said Jayarajan.

The charge sheet would now be given to him next month following a public interest litigation against his remarks against judges in July last year.

Jayarajan, at a public meeting, made unparliamentary remarks against the judges after a high court ruling banned roadside meetings by political parties.

A three-member bench comprising Chief Justice J. Chelameswar, Justice A.K. Basheer and Justice K.M. Joseph ordered contempt proceedings against the CPI-M leader from Kannur.

Jayarajan, 50, is a two-time legislator and member of the party's state committee.

High court orders CBI probe into Kerala lottery scam (Lead)

The Kerala High Court Tuesday gave its nod for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into an alleged multi-crore-rupee lottery scam in the state.

There are allegations against agents of Bhutan and Sikkim lotteries that they siphoned off Rs.80,000 crore in the last four years by violating tax laws and diverting unclaimed prize money.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice J. Chelameswar gave the direction for a CBI probe on a petition filed by Congress leader V.D. Sateeshan.

The court issued the order after the central government, represented by Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium, agreed for a CBI probe.

Sateeshan approached the court in March demanding a CBI probe into the alleged scam.

Former chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan was keen on a probe but his cabinet colleague and former finance minister Thomas Issac opposed it.

Isaac accused the Congress-led central government of reluctance to transfer the powers to states to ban lotteries.

Reacting to the high court verdict, Issac while welcoming the probe said that one thing that should be included in the probe is the reason why the central government all this while was not keen on it.

"It must be recalled that in 2005 a public interest litigation demanding a CBI probe in the case had come up but the then chief minister Oommen Chandy (of the Congress) sat on that and saw to it that it never happened," said Issac.

State Congress president Ramesh Chennithala told reporters in Delhi that his party welcomed the decision on CBI probe since it will bring out the truth behind the lottery muddle.
