Kozhikode, May 28: The Kerala government was committed to eliminate child labour and forced begging in the state as soon as possible, Social Welfare and Panchayats Minister M K Muneer today said.Talking at a meet-the-press programme organised by Calicut Press Club here, he said the government had recently convened a meeting of Social Welfare Board to chalk out ways and means to end the menace.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had expressed keen interest to end deployment of underprivileged kids, he said.
Stating that he was carefully studying the role of various departments under his Ministry, he said he would concentrate on proper utilisation of Central funds for the welfare of the people in the state.
Refuting the widely held notion that he got an unimportant portfolio, he said social welfare was a very important department which could do wonders by initiating steps for the uplift of marginalised sections of the society.
There are more than 90,000 panchayats and Kudumbashree Mission, a multi-faceted women-based participatory poverty eradication programme, under its purview, he said.
