THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Steps to ensure a transparent and corruption-free administration in Kerala and a fast-paced development mode without diluting the welfare of the less privileged sections were the main focus of governor RS Gavai's policy address in the state assembly today.

He said making big strides in a fast-track mode would be the moto of the UDF government headed by Oommen Chandy in the next five years.

Big infrastructure projects like Kochi Metro, Vizhinjam port and Kannur airport will be "taken out of cold storage", he said.

A health insurance scheme for people suffering from serious illnesses will be introduced, which will bring 3.5 million families in the state under its ambit.

The governor also made a scathing criticism of the previous LDF government saying "corruption and inefficiency" were its hallmark.

While Gavai chose to read out only the introductory and concluding portions of the address, the opposition members greeted the proceedings by displaying papers with the demand "remove tainted ministers" written on them.

Antony assures central assistance for development of ports

Kannur, Kerala, May 28 : Defence Minister A K Antony today assured Central assistance for the development of Azhikkal Port.

Speaking to reporters here, Mr Antony said he would do everything in his powers to facilitate the Central assitance for the project.

He also said infrastructure development in Cantonment Board areas would be undertaken only with the help of the state government.

Mr Antony said the Centre had extended cooperation to the previous LDF Government as it took only development and growth of the states into consideration and not the party or the Front ruling the state.

He expressed the hope that the current UDF Government in Kerala will extend full cooperation to the Centre.

Mr Antony said if the government, Opposition, industrialists and the bureaucracy worked together, Kerala can become a developed state in ten years.
