THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The decades-old library, which houses a large collection of rare books on Indian history, culture, spiritual traditions, temple arts and mythology, has been renovated and opened for public here.

Founded by erstwhile Travancore King Sree Chithira Tirunal Balarama Varma in 1936, the " Sree Chitra Central Hindu Library" has been a sought after hub for historians, ideologists and students of spirituality in the city.

Besides, rare titles in Malayalam, Tamil, Sanskrit and English, the library has a good collection of palm leaf manuscripts.

Recently, the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) drew up a plan to renovate the building and save the books and documents, that survived the ravages of time, and to open them for public.

As part of its revival, new books worth Rs 10 lakh were bought to replenish its stock and attract book lovers attention to the institution once again, a TDB spokesman said.

Jnanpith laureate O N V Kurup inaugurated the renovated library at a function here last evening.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Congress-led UDF Government said the huge wealth found from the cellars of Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple here was the asset of the shrine and could not be termed a 'treasure trove'.

The statement, by devaswom minister VS Sivakumar in the Assembly, came in the wake of some quarters arguing that the assets would come under the definition of 'trove' and the state should take over it under the Kerala Treasure Trove Act.

"You repeatedly describe it as 'nidhi' (treasure trove). It is the wealth of the temple," Sivakumar replied to a question by former home minister and CPI(M) leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.

He said foolproof security had been provided to the temple with personnel drawn from police, Rapid Action Force and State Commando Force. The government would bear all costs for the safety of the invaluable wealth in the cellars, he said in reply to a question from Palode Ravi of the Congress.

A total of 53 security personnel have been positioned inside the temple and another 74 outside the shrine. The entire security was under control of ADGP Venugoplan K Nair, the minister said.

Referring to reports on the value of assets found in the temple, Sivakumar said the temple was now the richest one in India. He also said that flow of devotees had increased significantly following the discovery of the valuables.

The invaluable articles found during an inventory included rare jewels, stone-studded crowns, heaps of gold and silver coins, idols and gold, silver and brass platters and lamps, whose value is estimated at nearly Rs one lakh crore.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A chain-snatching incident has been reported in the Padmanabhaswamy temple which has been put under heightened security vigil following the unearthing of treasure trove.

The chain was snatched from a woman devotee yesterday while she was waiting for 'darshan' in front of the sanctum sanctorum of the temple which has been witnessing an unprecedented rush of devotees following the surfacing of the priceless assets during an inventory, police said.

The incident caused some anxiety to temple authorities as it happened despite the presence of heavy security.

According to temple sources, the number of people, especially from northern states visiting the shrine, had increased after the treasure was found inside the shrine managed by a trust controlled by erstwhile Travancore Royal family.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Advocate TP Sunderarajan, the 1964-batch IPS officer whose legal intervention led to the stock-taking of Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple's colossal assets, died on Sunday, spurring talks of "divine retribution" among the believers.

The 70-year-old passed away at about 12.45am at his brother's home around 30 metres from the shrine's west entrance. A family source said Sunderarajan, who was otherwise in good health, was uneasy and feverish for the last two days. On Saturday evening, he complained of wheezing and said he would not last until Sunday morning. He refused to take any medicine or go to a hospital. "At about 12.45am on Sunday, he said he wanted to go to the toilet, but collapsed before he could step in," a family source said.

While some said his sudden death was divine retribution, others asserted he was not put through any suffering of old age. Stories of how tragedy had befallen those who entered the shrine, too, did the rounds during the day, but these could not be confirmed.

Sunderarajan's health, who was behind the legal intervention for the stock-taking of Kerala's Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple's assets, deteriorated on Saturday evening. He had said he would not last until Sunday morning. His family members chose to dismiss his apprehensions; apparently he had said the same thing earlier as well.

Sunderarajan also told a person close to him that he wanted to die before sunrise as otherwise the sun would pass from 'Uttarayana' (north) to Dakshinayana (south). According to Hindu texts, 'Uttarayana' is an auspicious time to leave the body.

By about 8.30am, Sunderarajan's wheezing increased but he refused to take any medicine or go to a hospital. If he is relatives are to be believed, he never took medicines all his life. A home blood glucose test showed his level had dropped to 34. Intravenous glucose failed to revive the dipping sugar level.

Sunderarajan had resigned from the Intelligence Bureau in 1974 to care for his ailing father T K Padmanabha Iyer who had lost his eyesight following a bout of diabetes. While in IB, he was a part of the inner security ring of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, said a family member.

Sunderarajan was a bachelor living with his brother's family. The mortal remains were consigned to flames later in the day.
