SW Monsoon: Heavy loss to standing crops, houses

Three persons were killed yesterday in Thiruvananthapuram after huge boulders, rubble and earth caved-in at a granite quarry at Vembayam.

Alappuzha and Kottayam districts continued to be the worst hit districts. As many as 41,905 people have been shifted to 240 relief camps in these two districts, sources told UNI.

The total loss as of today stood at 38.96 crores, which includes damage to standing crops, houses and other properties.

Standing crops in about 86.44 hectare of land has been destroyed in the last 24 hours, which amounted to a loss of Rs 46.26 lakhs. About 3670 hectares of agriculture land has been destroyed till today, which amounted to Rs 20.55 crore.

About six houses were completely damaged and 178 houses partially destroyed in the rains. The loss has been estimated at Rs 21.65 lakh. A total of 129 houses have been completely destroyed and 2042 houses partially damaged till today. The total loss to houses was estimated at 1.32 crores.

The Met office said rains occurred at most places in Kerala and very light rains in Lakshadweep area.

It warned of isolated heavy rain in Kerala in the next 48 Hrs.

It said strong onshore winds from westerly direction with a speed reaching 45 to 55 kmph was likely along and off Kerala coast and over Lakshadweep area during the next 24 hours.

Piravom, and Vadakara got five cm of rains each.

It was four cm of rains each at Alappuzha and Thrithala.

Manjeri, Mannarkkad, Vythiri, Ottappalam, Pattambi, Quilandy and Thrissur got three cm of rains each, the Met office said.
