Ex-Minister against private practice of govt doctors

Kochi, Kerala, May 28 : Former Kerala Health Minister P K Sreemathy today said the proposal of the newly-formed Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) Government to restore private practice of government doctors would invite serious adverse effects.

''I don't know in what context the new Health Minister made such a statement. He himself could not take any decision in this regard as it required Cabinet nod and certain amendments,'' she told UNI.

Claiming that the banning of private practice of government doctors by her government had given benefits to the common man, she said a Minister should not make such statements on his own.

If such a demand was raised from the side of the organisations of doctors fraternity, it could be understood and justified, she said, adding that the minister should not make such statements which may encourage private practice of government doctors.

Alleging that there were lot of ''plays'' behind that, she said of course there would be certain pressures from various quarters in this regard.

''Let us wait what the government is going to do in this regard and then we can react,'' she added.

Kerala Health Minister Adoor Prakash yesterday told the press that giving permission to government doctors to resume private practice was under the active consideration of the government.

The previous CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had banned private practice of government doctors so that medical facility could reach to common people in the state.
