Ex-IGP conviction upheld

Kochi, Jun 14 : The Kerala High Court today confirmed life imprisonment awarded by a CBI Court to former IG P K Lakshmana for his role in killing Naxal leader A Varghese.

A Division Bench comprising Justices Thottathil B Radhakrishnan and S Sateesh Chandran today dismissed an appeal filed by Lakshmana against conviction and sentence of the CBI Court.

The CBI court had convicted Lakshmana to life imprisonment and payment of compensation of Rs one lakh was ordered.

The Division Bench observed that there was no reason to interfere with the conviction order by the Special CBI Court.

The Court also observed that in a republic country like India, there was no place for killing by the police in the name of encounter.

The Court also dismissed the revision petition filed nu Thomas, brother of Varghese, seeking enhancement of the sentence to Mr Lakshmana.

There was no reason for enhancement of the punishment, said the court while dismissing the revision petition.

The CBI court had convicted Lakshmana for being a conspirator in killing of Naxal Leader Varghese 40 years ago.
