Awareness prog against liquor consumption in the offing: Minister

Kochi, May 27:Stating that consumption of liquor has increased among youth and children in the state, Kerala Excise Minister K Babu said awareness programmes would be organised in college campuses to check the use of liquor.

Participating in a meet the press programme at the Press Club here, he said the government had decided to produce a short film, jointly with Malayalam film producers, against the use of liquor.

Assuring that the government was committed to protect the traditional toddy tapping sector, he, however, categorically stated that the new UDF government would take all measures to check the production of artificial toddy and the government would hold discussions with all labour organisations in this regard.

He also informed that the government would introduce a new Abkary policy in the state soon.

Pointing out that the aim of the UDF government was to reduce the number of IMFL outlets in the state, he said the government had decided to cancel the opening of 12 IMFL outlets in the state as announced by the previous LDF government.

He also clarified that the government would never misuse the Excise Department, even though the government was struggling to find funds for developmental activities and it was not the government policy to fill the state treasury through the sale of liquor
