Mullappally backs Jairam Ramesh on Athirappilly

Kozhikode, Jun 14: Union Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran today justified his colleague Jairam Ramesh's contention that proposed Athrappilly Hydroelectric Power Project in Kerala was not in the interest of the state and nation as well.

Talking to newspersons after switching on mega serial by Director Bhuvana Chandran, ''Payyamvelli Chandu'', under the banner of Gokulam Movies, he said Kerala would not be benefitted by the proposed project which could cause ecological hazard.

Denying Centre's nod for the project, Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest Jairam Ramesh had said in Thiruvananthapuam yesterday that he was not in favour of the project as it was neither in the interest of the State nor the nation.

Ruling out Central probe into alleged multi-million rupee fraud unearthed in the State recently, he said Kerala Police was on the right track to book the culprits.

He said he held a detailed discussion with Chief Minister Ommen Chandy on the issue involving certain firms reportedly swindling crores of rupees through investments promising high return from people in the Malabar Region.

Cautioning the people, he said they should ensure they do not get cheated by such unscrupulous elements in future.
